I will always be grateful for having met Mrs. Vesic. I had seen her at concerts at Duke for nearly two decades but did not know her until recently when I came to work at Duke. She has been a strong supporter of the Duke University Musical Instrument Collections, attending museum concerts from the beginning with our inaugural concert in 2002, and most recently supporting the new Rare Music series co-sponsored by the Duke University Libraries.
On a more personal note, I was glad I had the chance to join her for lunch one day at her house before my Campus Club program at The Forest in February. There, among other things, I discovered that Mrs. Vesic had turned down the chance to be a movie star in order to support her husband's career. We made plans to get together this summer once she was feeling better, and I had looked forward to speaking with her more and am deeply saddened to hear of her death this past weekend.
I shall always remember her kindness, her elegance, her attention to detail in everything she did, and her devotion to the arts. I will also remember a love that we shared: photography. She always had to have photographs of events. We had discussed the possibility of my helping her digitize her collection of photographs so that they could be posted online. If this is not going to be done by the library or her family, I would still be happy to undertake this project – if only I had been able to do this alongside her!
